2006 was the 50th Anniversary of the RSCDS Norwich Branch
and to commemorate it members devised some new dances:

NORFOLK BROADS HORNPIPE

(32 bar Hornpipe for three couples in a four couple set)

Bars

1 - 8          1s and 2s set and rotate. 1s finish facing partner's second corner.

9 - 16        1s and second corners dance a half diagonal reel of four, 1s
pulling right shoulder back to finish facing partner's first corner. 1s and first comers dance
half diagonal reel of four to finish 1M at top of set between 3s facing down 1W between 2s facing up

17- 24       1s dance diagonal rights and lefts up and down the dance to
finish 1M at top between 2s facing down; 1W between 3s facing up.

25 – 32     1s cross giving right hands and cast, 1M round 3M, 1W round
2W into second place own sides.

All three couples turn right hand to finish 2,1,3,4. Repeat from second place.

Devised by Roger Belshaw to describe the erratic progress of the floating gin palaces on the Norfolk Broads at the height of the season.

SQUARE CUT DIAMOND

(Medley for four couples in a square set. 64 bars Strathspey, 64 bars Reel)

Bars

1 - 8           All dance interlocking reels of four, passing partner right shoulder to begin.

9 - 16          All face in, join nearer hands with partner and set, advance for two steps, retire with corner person on the diagonal for two steps, face corner and set.

17 - 24        All dance interlocking reels of four passing corner right shoulder to begin.

25 - 32        On the diagonal join nearer hand with corner and set, advance for two steps,
join nearer hand with partner to re-form the square, retire for two steps, face partner and set.

33 - 40        All turn partner right hand. All turn corner left hand.

41 - 48        All face in, join nearer hand with partner and set and petronella in tandem. Repeat.

49 - 56        Half Schiehallion reels.

57 – 64       All circle to the left and back. Repeat bars 1- 64 in Reel time.

NORWICH ASSEMBLY

(32 bar Strathspey for three couples in a three-couple set)

Bars

1 - 8             1s set to each other, cast off one place (2s step up on bars 3- 4). 1s dance left shoulder round first corner to finish back to back in centre of set facing first comer.

9 - 16           Saltire formation:

9 - 10     1s dance out to first corner position; 2M and 3W dance across set to partner's place;

2W and 3M dance into centre of set turn left-hand three quarters to face first corner position.

11 - 12          1W dances across the set at the top; 1M dances across the set at the bottom;

2M and 3W dance into centre and turn left hand three quarters to face first corner position;

2W and 3M dance out to first corner position.

13 - 14          1s dance into centre, turn left hand three quarters to face partner's first corner position;

2M and 3W dance out to first corner position;

2W and 3M dance across the set at top/bottom.

15 - 16          1s dance out to partner's first corner position;

                             2M and 3W dance across set at top/bottom;

2W and 3M dance one place up/down opposite sideline, to finish as in fig. 1.

17 - 20          All three couples set and circle to the left two places, to finish as in fig. 2.

21 - 24          1W dances half figure of eight round 2W while 1M dances half figure of eight round 3M.

25 – 28         1s and 3s dance set and link.

29 – 32         1s and 3s circle to the left to finish 2,3,1.

Repeat with a new top couple.

ROUNDABOUT REEL

(40 bar Reel for four couples in a square set)

Bars

1 - 8            1s and 3s set, change places right hand with opposite person; 3M and 1W dance half figure
of eight around 4s dancing behind them to begin, similarly 1M and 3W dance around 4s,
to finish in original places.

9 - 16           2s and 4s repeat bars 1 - 8.

17 - 24        All set; all four women dance right hands across halfway,
pass the opposite man left shoulder to dance round him into his partner's place.

25 - 32        All set to corners; change places right hand with corner; all couples set and link.

All are now with original partner, having progressed one place.

33 - 40        Circle to the left and back.

GOLDEN MOMENTS

(32 bar Reel for five couples)

Bars

1 - 4            1W and 2W and 3W and 4W half turn left hand, while men
turn right hand into double triangle positions. All set.

5 - 8            1s and 4s and 3s and 5s repeat. 4s and 5s move into side
lines on last bar, pulling right shoulder back.

9 - 16          2s and 3s (top and bottom couples) cross right hand and cast one place (4s and 5s move up or down on 11 - 12). 2s and 3s dance right hands across.

17 - 24        2s, 1s and 3s (middle three couples) dance six hands round and back.

25 - 32        All five couples advance and retire. 4s and 5s (top and
bottom couples) cast one place while 2s cross giving right hands to top place and 3s cross down left hand to bottom place. All set.

NORMAL FOR NORFOLK

(32 bar Strathspey for three couples in a four couple set)

Bars

1 - 2            1s cross giving right hands.

3 - 8            1s cast two places, turn two hands to face out on opposite sides and cast up to second place WHILE 3s dance up to the top, turn two hands to finish in top place own sides. 2s step down on bars 7 - 8.

(The order is now 3, 1, 2 with 1s on opposite sides)

9 - 16          Diagonal rights and lefts – 1W gives right hand to 3W, 1M to 2M to begin.
(Finish 2, 1, 3 all on opposite sides)

17 - 24        Reels of three on the opposite sides, 1s giving right shoulder to second corner position.

25 - 32        All three couples set and link. 1s turn two hands one and a quarter times to finish in second place own sides WHILE 3s and 2s chase clockwise half-way round set to finish 2,1,3,4.

Repeat from second place.

THE BIRTHDAY MEDLEY

(Medley for four couples in a square set. 64 bars Strathspey, 64 bars Reel.)

Bars

1 - 4            1s and 3s advance towards each other, turn both hands once round to finish 1M and 3W facing 2s, 1W and 3M facing 4s.

5 - 8            All dance parallel right shoulder half reels of four.

9 - 12          1M and 3W cross out between 4s, 1W and 3M cross out between 2s, to finish 1s in third place and 3s in first place.

13 - 16        2s and 4s set and link.

17 - 28        2s and 4s repeat bars 1 - 12.

29 - 32        1s and 3s set and link.

33 - 36        Double half ladies' chain: women dance right hands across halfway, while men dance into woman's place, women turn man opposite.

37 - 44        All set to corners and change places giving right hands and repeat to places.

45 - 48        Double half men's chain to end with own partner, men facing in, women facing out ready for 

49 - 64        Schiehallion reels.

Repeat in Reel time. First four bars 1s and 3s advance and turn with four pas-de-basque.

I Q 100

(32 bar Reel for three couples in a four couple set)

Bars

1 - 8            1s, 2s and 3s dance reels of three on the sides, 1W giving left shoulder to 2W and 1M giving right shoulder to 2M to begin. (Touch hands where possible).

9 - 16          1s set to each other, cross down to second place opposite side (2s step up on bars 11 - 12); 1s set to each other, cross down to third place own side (3s step up on bars 15 - 16).

17 - 24        2s, 3s and 1s circle to the left and back.

25 - 32        1s set to each other, dance to the top of the set and cast into second place own side
(3s step down on bars 27 - 28).

All three couples set to partners.

Repeat from second place.

This dance is offered as an antidote to the many complex dances on the current repertoire.

EMBROIDERY STRATHSPEY 

(A 32 bar Strathspey for four couples in a four couple set) 

Bars

1 – 8           1s cross giving left hands.

1W cross with 2W giving right hands. 1M cross with 2M giving left hands.

2s and 1s cross giving right hands to partner. (1s finish in centre of set in second place opposite side, nearer hands joined facing down.) 

9 – 12         1W and 3M turn right hand while 1M and 3W turn left hand once round. 1s turn two hands half way round to face up in second place own side, nearer hands joined. 

13 – 16       1W and 2W turn right hand while 1M and 2M turn left hand once round. 1s turn two hands halfway round to face down in second place opposite side nearer hands joined. 

17 – 24       1s, 3s and 4s dance reel of three on sides (1s dance in and down, 3s out and up, 4s in and up to begin).

1s cross down on last 2 bars to third place own side, while 3s dance up to second place.

25 – 32       1s and 4s dance right hands across for 3 bars, left hands across for 3 bars, 1s cast to fourth place, 4s dance up to third place on last 2 bars.

HONEYSUCKLE

(A 40 bar Reel for four couples)

Bars

1 - 8            1s and 2s dance right hands across halfway; 1s and 3s dance left hands across halfway
while 2s cross giving right hands; 1s and 4s dance right hands across halfway
while 3s cross giving right hands. 1s and 4s cross giving right hands.

9 - 16          1s cross up between 4s, dance out behind 3s, cross up between 2s and
cast round 2s into second place own side. (2s step up on 15 - 16).

17 - 24        2s with 1s and 3s with 4s dance double figures of eight, 1s crossing up and
3s crossing down to begin.

25 - 32        1s and 3s (middle 2 couples) dance rights and lefts.

33 - 36        1s dance down between 3s, cast behind 4s to fourth place own sides.
(3s and 4s step up on 35 - 36).

37 – 40       All four couples turn partner twice by the right hand.
